More About J. David Pleins
J. David Pleins, Ph.D., is a Professor of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University in the heart of Silicon Valley in California. His interests span a variety of time periods, cultures, issues, and religious traditions. His childhood in a fundamentalist setting had one advantage: navigating the chapters and verses of the Bible still comes easy to him! But even in high school he was always interested in a broader view and avidly read Hindu and Buddhist texts alongside Christian mystics and existentialist novels. Along the way, he has worked on ancient languages, such as Hebrew and Greek, participated in archaeological work in Jordan on the Roman trade network, and even learned to play flamenco guitar! Currently, he teaches classes on the creationist debates, the history of religion, mythology, biblical literature, and, of course, the Darwin question. His research on Darwin's writings and Romanes's poetry has taken him to England and Scotland for research. The rediscovery of Romanes's Memorial Poem published in his In Praise of Darwin is a highlight of his career and he is very excited to bring this work to a wider public.
